Patient Science: Citizen Science Involving Chronically Ill People as Co-Researchers

Citizen science projects in health-related research usually follow a crowdsourcing approach where laypersons primarily have supplying role data collection. By contrast, this article presents an on much higher engagement level (co-creation) team of professional and citizen scientists jointly plans, implements, evaluates scientific study chronic disease from which the (patient) themselves suffer. We call patient science; it systematically makes use patients’ expertise living with disease. This describes pilot project conceptual differences compared to other participatory approaches medical health research. It elaborates implications involving chronically ill people as co-researchers and, finally, reflects benefits challenges science.
